As a (naïve) trainee solicitor, I assumed there was one straight path up to success. How wrong was I?! My career has certainly had twists and turns, ups and downs. The idea of a ‘Career Jungle’ as opposed to a ‘Career Ladder’ was created by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, who said: “Look for opportunities, look for growth, look for impact, look for mission. Move sideways, move down, move on, move off. Build your skills, not your resume.” The idea of the Career Ladder forces you to move in one direction only, up or down. Some of the best and most successful stories however, simply embrace the journey and trust the process, instead of fretting about getting every step right. Idealistic? Perhaps. But if your focus is on the destination, if you fall prey to 'destination addiction', you are likely to miss out on the wonders of the journey.
