The holy trinity of physical, mental and emotional wellness has been gaining momentum for years, but the difference now is that social distancing and the economic fallout brought on by Covid-19 have stirred up high levels of anxiety and fear.
Good leaders and managers should be focusing their energy on supporting a workforce bombarded by anxiety and uncertainty.
Well-intentioned positive phrases churned out by HR departments and social media - ‘Happy thoughts only!’ are designed to provide emotional support but they can be harmful by disseminating “toxic positivity.”
Toxic positivity rejects anything that may be viewed as negative and is critical of those who can’t “snap out of it” and look on “the bright side.”
To force a positive outlook can encourage a person to keep silent about their struggles, leaving them alone with shame and pretending everything is fine.
Perhaps the message shouldn’t be “you must see the bright side,” but the more realistic “if you can’t see the bright side, that’s okay.”
Organisations might usefully stop constantly recommending people to always stay positive. It isn’t realistic or helpful and can add extra pressure which is not needed.
